I can’t believe we’re already at the end of the season for The Closer. Alas, it’s true. Until next summer, this is it for Brenda and Fritz and the Major Crime Unit. Fortunately, they saved a good one for the finale. Has Brenda been so hip-deep in work that she’s neglected the important things in life? That seemed to be one of the concerns, as well as the fun of dealing with someone who — at best — is a thorn in Chief Johnson’s side. For all that and more, jump to the next page and tell Joel the cat he’s not allowed on the table.

122209 1509 TheCloserSe1 The Closer Season 5 Episode 15 Dead Mans Hand (season finale) Recap

The Pope had spoken and whether or not Brenda was thrilled, she was forced to deal with Captain Raydor and the potential spousal abuse case involving one of Raydor’s detectives. The minute you saw the uniformed cop — Dunn — on the scene having killed the husband in self-defense, you knew something was hinky.

Still, it was great to see Will chew out Brenda for dropping the ball on the investigation. She really did screw up because if Major Crimes had interviewed the husband before he was shot it may never have escalated into a homicide. How scary is it to think that the interdepartmental tussle between Raydor and Johnson was responsible for a man’s death? What’s scarier is knowing that probably happens in real life.

Raydor was hardly blameless in all this. She was pushing Brenda’s buttons, and using Will to get him to force Brenda into action, too. Clearly, the Major Crimes Unit wasn’t pursuing the case aggressively until the husband turned up dead. Considering how the unit usually operates, it surprised me that Gabriel — who’s the most politically savvy of the bunch — didn’t offer to take the lead for Brenda. But he didn’t, so the two good-looking cops who looked guilty of conspiracy were, in fact, guilty of conspiracy. Actually, he was her dupe, but still…

There were two interesting relationship developments in this episode. The first was obvious. Brenda and Sharon do not like each other. They are like oil and water. They may be on the same LAPD, but they are not sisters in blue. Pope would be wise not to keep throwing them together, although Commander Taylor and Johnson eventually worked out their differences and now are best buddies. Still, the scene with Mary McDonnell and Kyra Sedgwick explaining how they dislike each other was very good.

The other relationship issue at hand was Brenda and Fritz’s marriage. Brenda really does seem oblivious to her husband’s problems. I’m not talking about his job offer in D.C.; that was up to Fritz to tell his wife, not to Brenda to figure it out. I’m talking about her not taking her turn caring for him the way he takes care of her. Brenda is messy and self-involved and I think Fritz was right to call her on it.

But why is Brenda still drinking in front of Fritz? I was sure when he wrote that note to her about “needing a meeting” that we were going to learn that he wants her to stop drinking wine at home because the temptation was too much for him. But, no, it was the job thing. It seemed to me that the writers were setting up how The Closer will end someday. The FBI will offer Fritz a new job and Brenda will give up the LAPD and relocate with him. And Joel will go along, too, of course.

‘The Closer’ Season 5 Finale Clip

Posted by:   in Video · Comments (0)

In a newly-released clip, Mary McDonnell pushes Kyra Sedgwick to the limit about investigating a spousal abuse case, to the point where there is yelling. McDonnell makes a return as Captain Sharon Raydor on the season 5 finale of “The Closer” this upcoming Monday, December 21.

Capt. Raydor approaches Major Crimes about delicately looking into a possible case of spousal abuse involving one of her female officers. “[Brenda is] put into a very awkward position,” creator James Duff said. “She doesn’t like having to help out Capt. Raydor. She takes her orders very literally – so literally that she’s indirectly responsible for someone being shot.”

In another side, Fritz becomes increasingly irritated at feeling ignored by Brenda.

On Thursday, December 17, it was revealed that “The Closer” is nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards. One is given to Sedgwick for her portrayal as Brenda, one is for Outstanding Performance by Ensemble in Drama Series, and another for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a TV Series. Winners will be revealed on January 23.

The Closer Season 5 Episode 14 Make Over – Review

Posted by:   in Reviews · Comments (0)

121509 1740 TheCloserSe1 The Closer Season 5 Episode 14 Make Over Review“Hello, Beau Bridges? Yes, this is The Closer calling. Would you like an Emmy nomination? You would… Okay, we’re sending you the script now.”

Perhaps it didn’t happen exactly that way, but here was a show in which a gifted actor was presented a wonderful opportunity and he rose to the occasion. The Closer is one of those procedurals that has a deft touch with the comic episodes. Oh yeah, there are occasions when it gets a little bizarre — and this episode might have gone there but it didn’t. Instead, we had a terrific twist in more ways than one.

We also got to see how adorable Kyra Sedgwick looks in a hot pink ski parka. For more on the wardrobe and the old folks getting killed by the faux nurse, read on.

Before Flynn, Provenza’s partner was George Andrews, and by all accounts, he was quite a guy. While Provenza was nostalgic about reconnecting with George, Brenda was ticked. I don’t blame her. She was ready for a ski vacation with Fritz when this old case was dumped on Major Crimes and Provenza hadn’t bothered to tell her. He had a handle on it, he said, but that was before the train with George Andrews arrived.

I hadn’t anticipated that George had become Georgette. Provenza was undone that his ex-partner was a transsexual. That didn’t matter to the case, except that Georgette couldn’t testify as a woman because the confession he/she had obtained had been as a man. I agreed with Brenda about this one: “We need her testimony, not her testicles.”

As played by Beau Bridges, Georgette had her pride. She was not going to deny herself to appear in court as a man. That would have been a lie. Provenza tried to bully Georgette to “man up.” Strap ‘em down and testify.

The Closer is nothing if not clever in the writing. Georgette wouldn’t perjure herself, but she would go undercover. That meant pretending to be a man to get Doris Osgood to implicate her son in the crime and connect her to the other — previously undiscovered — murders of the older patients who presumably died of natural causes.

Beau was much more attractive as George. As Georgette, he was a very ugly woman, especially because of the eyebrows. A real tranny would have had those brows manicured. But he was great in the interview room.

I also loved how Georgette was still straight, in that he (George), still was attracted to women. He had his eyes on Brenda and her “caboose.” It drove Provenza — who we now know is Louie Provenza — nuts. Favorite line: “You had a sex change to become a lesbian?”

The big tipoff on the plot was the son. He wasn’t that naive to believe that the LAPD wanted to clear his mother’s name. He would have consulted with those expensive lawyers of his, so that’s when it seemed that Osgood was involved in his mother’s crimes.

The subplot of the Big Bear ski weekend was fun, if only to see how Fritz played Brenda. He’s getting really good at it; first with Joel, now with this trip. Sending her pictures from the slopes was proper motivation for her to close the case. The fact that she never made it to the ski resort wasn’t as important as the pink parka made it to the romantic clinch at the end.
